Rumor: Pierre McGuire on Minnesota and Colorado’s Radar

with one comment

I can barely imagine Pierre McGuire running a fantasy team, let alone a real time. However, according to recent reports from the Minnesota Star Tribune and speculation from the Denver Post, Pierre McGuire is on the shortlist for the vacant General Manager positions for the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche.

Adrian Dater from the Denver Post makes valid arguments for justifying hiring McGuire:

And, if I were Pierre Lacroix, I would give McGuire a good, hard look for the Avs GM job. After all – can you name me anyone who has seen more NHL games in the last few years than McGuire has most likely? Can you name me a person who has has a more varied menu of personnel he’s spoken to in the last few years – among players and coaches and everybody else in hockey? It’s part of his job description to talk to everybody in the game, and I think it would be smart for any team to consider him.

However, can you imagine McGuire running a National Hockey League team? Ninety percent of his time would be spent on trying to acquire Dion Phaneuf. Why? Because he’s a monster! Then he would probably try and get Ryan Getzlaf. Why? Because he’s a monster! Sidney Crosby? MONSTER!! He woud then make his next order of business to revamp the team and sign the MonStars from Space Jam as his new power forwards. Why? Because they’re Monsters!

Seriously, McGuire is one of the top hockey minds in the business, but he is more suited for behind the glass. There is no doubt that he has vast experience around the game as a top hockey analyst for TSN and former assistant coach for the 1991-92 Stanley Cup winning Pittsburgh Penguins. But he yells too much. He is impatient. He is too emotional. He also stands uncomfortably close to everyone he talks to, which would weird out other GM’s and hamper his dreams of trading John Michael Liles for Dion Phaneuf.

It would be interesting to see if he does get a serious look at either positions. It would be more interesting to see if he hires Gord Miller as his head coach or Darren Dutchyshen as his personal assistant.
