Let’s Get Back to some Hockey: Flyers Sign JVR.

I haven’t blogged about hockey in a long, long time. Last time, I believe, was regarding Alex Ovechkin’s 50th goal celebration. I think TSN is still talking about it. One reason I have neglected it is because my fantasy team has shit the bed in the past month. My fantasy teams pretty much dictate the level of interest I have for any sport. Isn’t Joe Thornton known for finishing off seasons strong?

Anyways, I just finished classes for this semester and my entire life, and I read that the Philadelphia Flyers signed 2007 2nd overall pick James van Riemsdyk to an entry level contract. This is huge news for the Flyers. He refused to sign last year and opted to return to the University of New Hampshire for his sophomore season. The New Jersey boy has compiled 74 points in 67 games. He was also a leader for Team USA in the past 2 World Junior Championships.

He wil head to the Phantoms immediately. It is possible that he could join the Flyers for the last one or two games of the season. I mean, if this guy can go right from the NCAA to the first line of an NHL team JVR can do it, right? Well, not exactly. The Leafs are not exactly the Flyers.

The Flyers are STACKED with amazing young talent, which will keep them competitive until the year 3000. The Flyers already have Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Joffrey Lupul, who are just entering their prime now. Claude Giroux looks like he is ready to be a point per game player, if he gets the minutes.

Therefore, van Riemsdyk has a harder path to making his NHL debut than the son of one of the Hanson brothers. However, that being said, it would not surprise me if he sees NHL action by the end of the season. The Flyers have been wanting this kid to sign for 2 years now and want him to progress quickly. Getting his feet wet in the last 2 games of the season may help JVR get an idea of where he needs to be and what he needs to work on to be a poductive player next season.
