Mission Cap of the Night: New York Islanders.
The New York Islanders are the worst team in the league because they are the smartest team in the league. Going into last night’s game they felt Tampa Bay sneaking up behind them for the last place position in the league (Tampa actually as less wins than NYI); therefore, the Islanders knew they had to come out with a lackluster performance if they wanted to maintain their position for the best chance at landing John Tavares. They needed to lose last night vs the Leafs.
The Islanders got out to a good start by allowing a Lee Stempniak goal late in the 1st period. Then disaster strikes. Kyle Okposo and Blake Comeau, two youngsters who apparently didn’t get the memo, score two late goals before the end of the period. Garth Snow goes nuts. There is no doubt GM Snow went into that locker room and reemed out his team for taking the lead in the game.
The team responds in the second period. Not only are they held off the score board, but they take 5 penalties in a row to coerce the Leafs to score. Since the Leafs are the Leafs, the score remains 2-1 Isles. Leafs finally score in the 3rd and don’t take any chances in overtime, by letting Mikhail Grabovski score 50 seconds into the period.
Good on you Islanders. They tried their best not to get that extra point, but at least they didn’t get the dreaded two points. They are one step closer to landing the ultimate prize and for that, they have earned the MCofN.
