Mission Cap of the Night: Jason Smith, ESPN Radio.
Before going to bed, I usually turn on the Fan590 when they stream Jason Smith’s All Night on ESPN Radio. I love listening to JS. He has a respectable opinion about everything – including hockey. I have never heard him talk about hockey in the 6 years I have listened until last night. He talked about Alexander Ovechkin’s highlight goal against the Montreal Canadiens last week. He was dropping names like Bobby Orr and even Roman Hamrlik. I would have never suspected JS to know a name like Roman Hamrlik. Apparently JS plays broom ball and pick up hockey in his spare time.
Of course, like every other sports personality, he also weighed in on Ovechkin’s situation with Sidney Crosby and Don Cherry. He concentrated more on the personal rivalry between Ovechkin and Crosby. Although he believes that Crosby is the better all around player, Ovechkin is the better exciting goal scorer – an element that is essential for NHL growth in the US.
His argument is basically that this situation is exactly what the NHL needs: a persoal rivalry between the two best players in the league. He comapres this situation to a possible Kobe vs LeBron rivalry in the NBA. Could you imagine the hype and plubicity that rivalry would get around the world? It would even make the likes of Barry Melrose and Barry Manilow choose sides.
