Minnesota Wild trades Niklas Backstrom to Philadelphia for Joffrey Lupul, Martin Biron/Antero Nittymaki & a pick or a prospect.

That sounds about fair. The Flyers need a goalie. They need a good one. Marty Biron has been good, buthis play has been inconsistent this year. Niklas Backstrom has been very good in his career with Minnesota, and is ready to become a free agent in the summer. Apparently contract talks have not been going to well between the Wild and Nikl-Back. This is a pefect fit for both sides. Of course, if the Wild want to compete in the playoffs, they will slightly be downgraded in goal, but Martin Biron has proved a number of times he can be a #1 goalie for a playoff team. They also do not want to lose Backstrom to free agency and get nothing in return.

Let’s talk about the return. Joffrey Lupul is a top 6 forward on a great offensive team. Lupul was the main piece in the Chris Pronger deal that sent him to Anaheim from Edmonton. I’m not too sure if Lupul is the type of forward that would fit in Jacque Lemaire’s defensive system, but Lupul is a skilled forward who can put the puck in the net.

With Briere coming back, the Flyers have 7 top 6 forwards. One of them has to go. Scott Hartnell is one the last legs of his contract as well, but I don’t know if Minnesota is going to take a guy on his last year and have him leave in the summer. Hartnell is also a character guy and has shown progress with Jeff Carter. Trading Lupul will also free up a spot on the forward lines for Claude Giroux. This kid is too good not to be in the NHL.

The Flyers have too many consistent NHL forwards and too many inconsistent goalies. Let’s see this happen.
