Leafs are Coach Killers; Tortorella Possibility.
The Leafs have done it again. A few weeks ago, they handled the Penguins, and the day after, Michel Therrein was dumped. Last night, the Leafs beat the Rangers in OT and this morning, Tom Renney was let go. In both cases, the Leafs were not the main cause of the firings as the damage had already been done. However, it is a pretty wierd coincidence that the Leafs have done this twice. Perhaps a wierder coincidence: every team that started their season in Europe has made a coaching change. The Rangers, Penguins, Senators, and Lightning have all seen coaching changes. Next year the Panthers, Red Wings, Blues and Blackhawks will start the season in Europe. Maybe Mike Babcock would want to think about taking that week off.
It is a shame that Tom Renney had to be let go because he is a good coach, and the players let him down. There has been a lot said about Gomez and Drury, and rightfully so. However, let’s talk about GM Glen Sather, who has absolutely wasted money on Wade Redden and Michal Rozsival. By the way, why did Rozsival change his number? Whatever, he stinks.
It is now being speculated that John Tortorella may replace Renney in NYC. This would be a very, very, very intriguing match. Not only would Torts bring a hard nosed approach to a bunch of veterans that need discipline, but Torts hates dealing with the media. He especially hates Larry Brooks of the New York Post. They have butted heads a number of times when Torts was the Head Coach of the Lightning. New York City is the hub of the media universe. If he gets hired on, it will be interesting how he handles the media, after he has spent the last few months being a member of the media with TSN.
